We only know one side of an argument, and that is the side
that we agree with. We form an opinion based on what we know, and as listeners
of music we only know one side of the argument about illegal downloading and
the inherent value of music. As listeners of music we form one opinion of
illegal music sharing and the inherent value of music, musicians may have
another point of view. Different musicians may have conflicting opinions on the
subject. Well known musicians might care more than lesser known musicians. For this
project I interviewed The Glass Canoe, an experimental pop duo. The Glass Canoe
consists of two members, David Korrigan and Max O’Reilly who are from San
Diego. They are a lesser known band that sells most of
their music on the internet, and when I asked where they sell their music they
gave me a code to get it all for free! They clearly do not care whether or not
they make a huge profit from their music. When I asked if they care about
making a profit off their music they responded by saying, “It’s not so much
about profit as it is about making songs that mean something to us. Our songs
are very person and that’s really what we care about”. The duo both started
playing music in middle school and then they met in high school and took an
interest in recording and then they started producing their own songs. When I
asked what they thought about copyrighting they said, “Copyrighting is
definitely important so that your music can’t be ripped off by other artists.
As far as music being all of the Internet these days, it’s made it a lot harder
for artists to make any money to do anything like tour or make more albums”
I thought it was interesting to talk to a band that is just
starting out and trying to become more popular. I first learned about The Glass
Canoe when they followed me on Twitter and then sent me a link to their music.
I listened to their music online and really enjoyed it and when this project
was assigned I was eager to get their opinion on this topic. The Glass Canoe
utilizes the internet and different social networking websites in order to
expose their music to more people and gain more fans. At this stage in their
career they do not care about making a profit off of their music, they just
care about gaining fans and having more people listen to their music. They have
jobs other than their music and currently they only have their music available
online. They are such a small band that they only play shows locally because
their fan base is not that big and because they don’t have the money to tour.
When I asked them what they thought about illegal downloading music they said, “Illegally
downloading music has made “making it” in the music industry extremely hard. At
the same time it helps expose you to more people.”
The Glass Canoe has their own opinion on this topic, because
they are a small band. Better known artists probably have a different opinion
because they already have a big fan base and lots of money to tour, but The
Glass Canoe needs the internet to help show their music to people and to help
them gain fans. If it were not for the internet I would now know of them and
would not be able to understand why they feel the way that they do about this
topic.

It is so great you could reach out to a group that you are a fan of? Where is the band based?
I've found reading through these that many share the same love/hate sentiment with sharing music, for it exposes the group but denies them profit. I wonder where they would draw the line?
I like how you discuss how as regular music listeners we may have a different opinion on the illegal downloading of music than an actual musician would.
